About Us

Our Story

Vasanthie Pillai and Associates first opened its doors in August 1995 in Isipingo and established itself as a full service law firm foccusing on serving and protecting the interests of its clients.  In 2010 the practice moved to Athlone Park, a coastal suburb on the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.  Due to its ever expanding areas of practice and client base the practice is now situated in a business hub in the midst of a residential area being Athlone Court (corner of Linscott, Warner and Abelia Roads), opposite the library and Municipal clinic in Athlone Park, Amanzimtoti.

Our Motto

Over the past 25 years, the firm has maintained its motto, “Protecting your legal interests” in zealously championing the cause and protecting the interests of its clients, attempting wherever possible to curtail legal costs by advising clients on the prospects of success and, if applicable, alternate ways to resolve a dispute.

The firm’s logo of a disc depicts the shield of protection, which resonates with the firm’s motto. This is found in ancient Vedic history which upholds morals, ethics and values.

Our Commitment To Excellence

Despite being a full service law firm, we ensure that each of client’s matters receive the appropriate specialist skill that it requires which is achieved by our committed staff complement.

All practitioners are firmly committed to excellence, which is attained through our passion for practising law, our work ethic, attention to detail, diligence, efficiency and ultimately client satisfaction.

Fees And What Makes Us Different

We understand that engaging the services of an attorney can be unbudgeted for and often extremely expensive. We recognize that ones financial means should not preclude one from being able to litigate or defend a matter. The fundamental right to legal representation is entrenched in the Bill of Rights and everyone should have access to the law and the courts.

Those who cannot afford legal fees can approach the Legal Aid Board for legal assistance and representation in court matters.

However, we try our best to help those who still prefer to use our services with the following fee options, where applicable and explore the possibility of negotiation and mediation as alternatives to litigation in order to save time and money for our clients, yet vigorously guarding their legal interests.

Fixed Fee Agreements

Attorneys are entitled to charge clients per their hourly rate in respect of the work that is undertaken.  However, we are willing to provide fixed-fee legal services based on the value of the work to be performed rather than the number of hours worked eg. in the drafting of contracts.

Whilst this fixed fee agreement is not applicable to litigation matters, we can offer this in unopposed divorce matters as well.

Contingency Fee Agreements

These are written agreements that can be concluded between an attorney and client on the basis that the attorney will only be entitled to recover remuneration for their services if the client is successful in its claim. The agreement is concluded and signed by the attorney and the client upon accepting the mandate and prior to the initiation of legal proceedings.  The fees recoverable by an attorney will constitute a percentage of the client’s successful claim.

An attorney is entitled to charge up to twice the amount of his usual fees but not more than 25% of the amount that judgment was granted for.  Contingency fee agreements are governed by the Contingency Fees Act which prohibit contingency fee agreements in certain types of matters such as divorces.

Retainer Agreements

For corporate clients (where we receive instructions from businesses) we provide a retainer option, tailored to suit their specific business requirements.  After our first obligation-free consultation with you, and conducting a needs analysis, we can tailor a specific package to meet your business requirements.  The package could include consultations and legal opinions, drafting of letters of demand, drafting of contracts (leases, employment contracts, sale agreements, customer contracts, etc.) vetting of contracts, chairing dismissal hearings, etc.
